Meet the SumoMenko.com gang!

SumoMenko.com is the product of three individual's passion about sumo menko and sumo menko collecting.  Realizing a need for an English language, and in fact ANY language, sumo menko repository of some sort before this fascinating piece of sumo history is forgotten, we've worked hard at documenting our knowledge and passing it onto you.  We hope you enjoy this site and please let us know if you have any questions or would like to contribute your knowledge or any information about your collection.

Started Collecting -   2000
First menko owned -   1958 Dash 7-8
Why did I get started? -   I used to collect baseball cards as a kid then I saw a box of 1958 Dash 7-8 menko and I was hooked since I'm a "big" sumo fan.
Favorite Sumo Menko Set &Why -   #1: The 1930s Rikishi Sets

These are true pieces of artwork with hand drawn pictures of each rikishi in their kesho-mawashi.

#2: 1959 Yamakatsu Trump 7

The colors are vivid and the pictures are crisp.  The action shots and the rikishi in their kesho-mawashi are crystal clear.  This to me is the best all around set and best produced set of the 1950s and 1960s.

Favorite Rikishi from the Sumo Menko era -   Ozeki Mitsuneyama

He epitomized Gambarre as he crept his way up to Ozeki and won his only yusho in 1954 only to slowly drop down to the Maegashira ranks over the next 6 years before finally retiring.  He's was also from Gunma-ken!!

Favorite way to play menko -   Gu-Choki-Pa
